In the world of architecture, this French oak carving is known as a pediment, which is a triangular-shaped gable that surmounts vertical structures, in this case, a door frame. Dating to the 1700s, the pediment features a high relief carving of a cherub. The face of the curly-haired putto greatly protrudes from the rest of the motifs, which include a pair of highly detailed wings spread below, and two foliate rinceaux near the base of the pediment. A thin triangular molding enfolds the rest of the carvings, mirroring the overall shape of the piece. Although cherubs are associated with religious iconography, during the Baroque age (this is a period carving), European woodworkers were inspired by religious movements of the time, and often incorporated such imagery into furniture, architecture, and artwork. Our intricately carved oak pediment will make a fantastic piece of sculptural art and can be hung on any wall or even, as originally intended, above a door.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor nicks and losses, with an old fill to one of the cherub’s cheeks. Light age separations and small areas with very light discoloration, commensurate with age. Eyelet in the back for hanging.
