A versatile piece of French furniture, repurposed from a walnut coffre hand-carved in the 1700s. The small cabinet measures roughly 17 x 14, making it an attractive option where space is at a premium.

Old hinge marks can be seen on the back, indicating that some of this section was once the back of a storage chest. It is likely that the façade was part as well, as evidenced by the high level of carvings. A series of leafy stalks grace the entire front, surmounted by a carved rectangle with several layers of undulating molding. Within is a large rosette surrounded by an oval of egg and dart with roundels inside whorls. The frontage also serves as a door, opening to reveal a single shelf. Four bun feet have been added beneath the protruding molding of the apron, giving the cabinet a height of just over 19 ½ inches, allowing it to be used as a tabouret, footstool, or side table as well.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor age separations. Light nicks and fleabites, with very light old woodworm damage. As evidenced by the verso side (see detail photos of old hinge marks), sections of this cabinet were repurposed from an 18th-century trunk.
