The encoignure, or corner cabinet, is a practical piece of furniture for the savvy homeowner, as it makes use of awkward corner spaces. During the 1700s, when ours was hand-carved in Provence, France, it also served as a showcase of a household’s wealth and appreciation for the craftsmanship.

Designed to fit snugly into the intersection of two walls, the corner cabinet has a curved façade featuring two doors with musical trophy carvings. Each door has low-relief carvings of an array of musical accessories featuring music sheets, instruments, flowering vines, and gadrooned leaves. The rich brown patina of the wood accentuates the details of the carvings, which include motifs relating to nature, which is a hallmark of Provincial furniture. Behind the two doors, which open on large iron hinges, are two wedge-shaped shelves, with the bottom one being significantly larger. Topped by a jade-colored marble with cream, brown, and dark green veining, our exquisite French corner cabinet is the perfect option for any homeowner.

CONDITION: Strong antique condition. Evidence of old restoration to the marble and fills to the wood with more recent work to the back foot. Commensurate fleabites and losses to marble. Minor wood losses, nicks, and age separations. Key operates lock. One shelf has been added more recently, and although it is secured, one side is loose.
