Known as a coffret a courrier, this French letter box would have been used in the 1700s to conceal private papers or valuables. The leather exterior is adorned with foliate tooling, while the six-compartment upholstered interior is embellished with golden embossing.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor nicks and rubs to leather. Commensurate wear to lid and drawer openings. Light buildup to interior. The box comes with a key (not photographed), but the lock is ornamental, as the lid can still be opened if the key is turned.
