Known in France as an arrosoir, this copper watering pitcher dates to the 1700s. The construction is quite remarkable, with visible soldering marks that add to the charm of the piece. At the end of the arrosoir is an ovate rose, or sprinkler head, with a perforated cap, designed to produce a gentle shower that doesn’t wash away soil. The large, sweeping handle allows the user to maintain balance in their hand as the water level recedes. Notice the slightly dimpled texture on the main body, which is indicative of the hand-hammered nature of the arrosoir. Copper was the preferred material for European watering cans of the 18th century, as they were more resistant to corrosion and oxidation than iron. Our copper arrosoir can still be used functionally as a watering can, but items such as this are usually regarded more as rustic, décor pieces to be displayed on a shelf or wall bracket.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor indentations and visible solder marks to the exterior. Very light losses to the copper finish, resulting in some verdigris. Commensurate interior buildup.
