Hand-carved in Italy during the 1700s, this holy water font was crafted from beautiful Verona rosso marble. Known for its reddish color and light veining, this particular stone has a wonderful rose color with light gray, cream, and brown veining. Thick gadroon lobes adorn the outside of the oval basin, beneath a quarter-round rim under a raised molding.
Paired with a white marble column and a limestone plinth, the applications for our holy water font are quite numerous. This would make an interesting powder room sink (a drain hole would need to be added) or a unique fountain for a courtyard. It could even be utilized as a birdbath in a rose garden. As the basin is not attached to the pedestal, the font could also be used as a fascinating decorative bowl for a large table, such as on a stone table under a covered patio.
CONDITION: Very good antique condition with fleabites and minor losses. Light age separations and buildup to the interior, commensurate with age and use. To use as a sink basin, a drainage hole would need to be created. The white marble column and limestone plinth are not original to the font (18th century date refers only to the lobed basin).
