Description

This single plank table with wrought iron stretchers is a wonderful example of Spanish Baroque furniture from the 1700s. The rich, chocolate patina of the wood accentuates the hand-carved elements, most noticeably the two open lyre legs embellished with fretwork. At the top of each trestle is a pair of “bearers” with cyma reversa ends that support the one and a quarter inch single plank top.

Spanish tables were designed to be easily transportable, with wrought iron fiadores adorned with knops that collapse easily. These bars help the table keep its shape by crossing each other, but they can be released by turning the bolts that run through the lyre legs. Baroque tables from Spain were almost always constructed using walnut, as it is lighter than oak, but still able to be sculpted. Occasionally, woodworkers would employ more exotic woods, specifically mahogany. In the case of our single plank table, both woods were utilized, as the top is walnut, and the feet were carved from mahogany. It is a rustic, yet elegant table that can be used as an eating table for a breakfast nook, a console in an entry, or as a small library table.

CONDITION: Good overall antique condition with some recent repairs and refinishing. One leg slightly bent over time, which doesn’t splay outward as much as other side. Minor woodworm holes and nicks, some with old fills. See photos.
