Description

Hand-carved in walnut, the amazing fretwork of this flight of library stairs is distinctly Italian. The stairs, which date to the 1700s, would have been used functionally to reach the top areas of bookshelves, but because of the ornate carvings, they also would have been presented as furniture when not in use.

Six steps climb to a height of 40 inches, with each riser featuring identical carvings. Similarly, the stringers on the side have detailed lattices that are echoed by the X-shaped stretcher on the back. The wood has a deep brown patina that has been accentuated by several coats of wax. A perfect accessory for those hard-to-reach areas of a library, study, or living room, our walnut stairs could also be used as a unique indoor plant stand or staggered shelving, such as for small accessories or bathroom items.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Old restorations, most noticeably on the top step. Old woodworm damage resulting in light losses. Minor nicks and rubs.
