After Claude Lorrain, the 17th-century “French” painter (Claude was born in present-day Lorraine, France, but at the time, Lorraine was an independent duchy), this seaport oil painting is quite large, measuring roughly 5 feet by 6 feet. The busy seaport has tranquil aqua waters, with numerous oared vessels leaving the harbor. Larger, masted ships can be seen throughout the docks, while the shore is bustling with lots of activity, mostly from a congregation of well-dressed citizens waiting to embark.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. The canvas has been professionally restored, with light creasing and wear still visible. Minor nicks, rubs, and losses, to painted frame. Not rigged. Signed discreetly on a rock in the lower left corner (Charton).
