Sometimes referred to as a vintner’s table, this wine-tasting table would have been used in a French vineyard during the 1800s. The tilt-top construction allows the table to be stored discreetly when not in use, but when opened up, the top features a stylized vineyard label that has been hand-painted more recently. This table would have been used to serve wine during tastings or to celebrate the end of grape harvests.

In the center of the honey brown-colored table (the trestle supports and two legs with scrolled feet have been finished a darker brown) are a pair of regardant (looking back) ibexes with gray fur and golden crowns for collars. The chains of their collars are broken, which is a representation of freedom in heraldry. They are flanking an oval escutcheon that is topped with an open mural crown. The shield alternates blue and red bands while depicting a starry sky above a castle behind choppy waters with a crescent moon reflecting in the water. Written above and below the coat of arms display are the phrases “Grand Vins de Bordeaux”, “Domaine de Haut Passeloupe” and “Margaux”, which is most likely from a 1964 bottle of Haut Passeloupe that inspired the artist. CONDITION:  Strong antique condition.  The painted motifs were done more recently.  Minor age separation and losses from old woodworm, most of which have been filled.  Light nicks.
