The depth of the motifs of this hand-carved gilded mirror is quite impressive, making it an exquisite example of a Florentine mirror from the late 1700s. Immediately surrounding the beveled glass is a shapely, fluted border with an angular edge. Repeating leafy C-scrolls surmount the fluting, echoing the massive foliate carvings that comprise the rest of the frame. The ornate outer edge of the frame is a series of pierced acanthus margents with great movement. However, the most impressive motif might be the expansive crest centered around a scrolled console with lozenge ground. On either side is a large foliate rinceau that is once again full of life. At the apex is a highly curled leaf that extends beyond the rest of the frame, designed to be the focal point in whichever room it is placed.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor age separations. Light loss of silvering to glass, with presence of red bole to the frame, both of which are desired traits. Traces of old fills and touchups to gilding. Light nicks and losses to frame.
