Description

A wonderful and unique way to repurpose an architectural element, this zinc dormer has been fitted with antiqued glass, allowing it to function as a monumental mirror. Originally a window surround on the façade of a 19th-century building in northern France, the frame measures 69 inches tall by 84 ¾ inches wide. At the apex of the curved top molding is a female mascaron above a scrolled console with a thick cabochon and foliate detailing. The leaf spreads out in both directions, continuing beyond the large volutes that flank the woman’s face. Behind this elaborate crest are several moldings that culminate in thick, angular barbs that protrude beyond the rest of the frame.

In the center of the frame is a large, curved mirror that has some losses of silver that provide a highly sought after appearance. A well-oxidized lattice of cast iron fronts the mirror, portioning the glass into 10 panes. Our large zinc window dormer mirror would make an exceptional statement in a grand foyer, entry, or hallway.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor age separations and losses, including the nose of the mascaron (there is a piece of zinc that is unphotographed that fills the loss). Old holes from previous installations and light buildup to the zinc, which was outdoors (surrounding a window) for some time. The well-oxidized patina of the iron and the loss of silver to the glass give the mirrored section the appearance of being original.
