Description

A classic example of the intricate woodcarving known as Black Forest, this inkwell depicts an adult bird feeding its offspring. This inkwell dates to circa 1890, placing it in the middle of the time when Black Forest carvings first became popular (1880-1900). Today, Black Forest pieces are valued for the amazing, lifelike details of their nature-inspired themes.

The large carving of the birds perched on the segment of a branch with oak leaves doubles as the lid for an oval compartment. Additional oak leaf sprigs, one of which has a gathering of acorns, surround a shapely tray beneath the birds. If you look closely at the tray, you can see two delicately carved leaves incised near the acorns. Two of the inkwell corners are comprised of a cluster of roots that project upwards to form apertures for the thickly lobed glass ink receptacles. The inkwell is impressive, as the positioning of the motifs resembles a forest floor. Our Black Forest inkwell would make quite an impression on an office desk.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minor buildup to the glass receptacles, which do not have lids. Light nicks and fleabites.
