The intricacies of the Gothic-style motifs on this French oak trunk indicate that it was hand-carved by a master level woodworker. Dating to the mid-1800s, it appears that some panels might predate the trunk and would have been repurposed from an older piece of furniture. The wood has a dark brown hue, giving added depth to the rich carvings.
Tracery dominates the imagery on the side panels and the façade, with a lozenge pattern of ribbing separating each of the individual carvings. Both sides have identical carvings of four arcading under a mesmerizing display of ribs separating four lozenges with canted edges and rosette centers. The front consists of three panels, with the outer two having identical motifs of repeating lozenges filled with rosettes. A wishbone-shaped rib trisects each of the panels, while the middle one has scalloped shells above fleur de lys. Prominent barbed columns flank each of the panels, including the sides, surmounting sections of the thick apron that is flush to the floor. Our Gothic-style carved oak trunk can be used as a TV stand in the living room, to store blankets in a bedroom, or anywhere storage is needed.
CONDITION: Strong antique condition. Some age separations and losses, especially to a side panel (see photos). Commensurate buildup and woodworm damage. Restorations to the older panels, some of which were strengthened more recently.
