The rich carvings of this French walnut trunk depict allegories for winter (Hibernus) and summer (Æstas). Carved figures accompanying each season are set under a leafy niche, with the foliate theme continuing across the facade and sides. Each panel has a carved rinceau of vines with a chimeric creature rummaging through the undergrowth. The interior has a small till on the left side, capable of storing smaller items.
CONDITION: Good antique condition with commensurate nicks and losses. Evidence of old restoration to restore areas with wood worm damage. Functional lock with key. Sections of the trunk date to the 17th century, with some more recent additions, possibly in the early 1900s (as evidenced by the signature inside).
