Hand-carved in walnut during the 1800s, sections of this Italian triple niche bookcase are even older, having been repurposed from a confessional dating to the 1700s. The two outer bays have four adjustable shelves, while the center compartment has two shelves over a lockable door, with a third shelf behind the door. A deep recessed molding adorns the door, set in between thick rectilinear molding and a panel carved with a geometric motif. Thick cavetto cornices augment the beautiful apron, which also features multiple bracket feet. The apron beneath the door extends beyond the side moldings, mirroring the luscious crown that has several pilaster protrusions in the form of drop-down noix. Our Italian triple niche bookcase is a massive piece at eight and three-quarter feet wide, but it presents with a lighter, more architectural feel as a result of the open compartments. It would make a wonderful statement piece for a den, office, or library.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Sections of the bibliotheque are composed of a salvaged walnut confessional, dating to the 1700s. Old restoration coincided with the conversion to a bookcase, which occurred in the 1800s. Minor age separations. Light nicks and losses. Functional door lock with a key.
