Auriol French Octagonal Village Style Center Fountain from the South of France

$13,700.00

Description

Hand-carved from 14 pieces of French estaillade limestone, this octagonal center fountain would make a wonderful addition to a large landscape plot or a courtyard. The basin stones have a beveled top edge, which is mirrored by the subtle chamfered edges of the center column. Four scrolled iron spouts emanate from the column, each paired with a rosette backplate. Two pairs of iron bars traverse from the basin wall to the column, allowing for the placement of flower pots or decorative buckets.

Stone fountains could often be seen in French villages, connected to a natural spring to serve as a watering source for the citizens. The iron bars would have been used to hold buckets beneath the spouts, allowing water to be gathered for cooking and washing. This particular octagonal center fountain was hand-carved in Provence with a diameter of over six and a half feet.

CONDITION: Good condition.  Intentional distress, presenting as light nicks and losses.  Oxidation to the iron bars, spouts, and rosettes is currently uneven, but this will change over time.  Limestone can change colors with exposure to the elements.  Please contact us for photos of the current patina.
