Originally a wall-mounted fountain element that was paired with a basin in France during the 1800s, this highly carved limestone depicts a lion’s face. The mouth of the lion is slightly agape, which would have allowed water to cascade into a basin placed in front of the wall. The lion has developed a “beard” of brown, ochre, and green moss, further enhancing the appeal of the garden ornament.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Minot losses, mostly seen at the edges. The stone currently has a wonderfully colorful buildup of moss. Limestone can change color with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for photos of the current patina.
