Table boxes such as this shapely Venetian (Italy) one would have been found in wealthy European homes during the 19th century. Hand-carved from pine that was grown in Switzerland, our table box would have been used as early as 1800 for storing personal items, such as jewelry, documents, or other small valuables.

Ornate table boxes were used as status symbols as well, with more elaborate pieces being reserved for wealthier citizens. The shape of our box instantly sets it apart, as the bombé form is exaggerated by the low-profile arbalete aprons, ogee sides, and the curvaceous top, which is adorned at the apex by a scalloped leaf with a center cabochon. Beneath the crest is a sinuous door with a molding of scrolls and leaves, allowing extra storage. The main body features rope-twist moldings above and below the two door front, which opens to reveal a shelfless interior. Table boxes, as the name suggests, were designed to be displayed on tables; however, you can place our Venetian box on a mantel, console, or dresser, allowing you to store items without taking up much space.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Commensurate age separations. Minor buildup with light nicks and losses. Evidence of small, old restoration work.
