Based on the original 1614 ceiling fresco in Rome by Guido Reni, this 9′ tall by 16 1/4′ wide toile peinte depicts a mythological allegory of the passing of time. Aurora, the personification of dawn, dances across the sky, followed by the sun god, Apollo, on his chariot of steeds. The Horae encircle Apollo; they represent time and seasons. Phosphorus, the Morning Star, is depicted as a winged cherub carrying a torch, leading the way towards Aurora. The beautiful toile peinte was recently discovered in a chateau in Toulouse, France.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Wear commensurate with age, including light creases and minor paint rubs/losses. Very light age separations and rolling at the edges. Small areas with discoloration.
