Early 1900’s French Dining Table with Shaped Trestle Supports and Cartouche Carvings

Description

Dating to the early 1900s, this French dining table features a three-inch thick top supported by two wide pedestal legs with an open stretcher. The curvaceous base has fascinating hand-carved motifs, such as the S-shaped volutes that make up the legs, with dynamic rosettes and pinwheels forming the center of the whorls. Similarly, the scrolled feet have rosette center points, although on a much smaller scale. Both legs also have center cartouches depicting a shaped console charged with a bishop wearing a mitre and carrying his crozier, surrounded by scrolls and topped by a winged angel. The stretcher’s undulating form is also skillfully carved, again embellished with flowering volutes and large rosettes in the center. A rather unique table, the charisma of our French dining table is enhanced by inherent variations and losses that give the wood an overall beige hue with areas of darker brown to honey colored.

CONDITION: Strong antique condition with various stains, nicks, losses, and color variations as seen in photos. Some lifting or wear to the veneer in areas. Replaced board on the table end with a long fill across the top, as well as restoration to the stretcher. Presents well with a light, washed look with distressed areas. See photos.
