Description

Indicative of furniture in the style of Louis Philippe, this stunning bibliothèque features clean and elegant lines with restrained ornamentation that emphasizes the inherent beauty of the wood grain. In the case of our French bookcase from circa 1900, the hand-carved walnut is paired with two panels of burl walnut veneer that have a smoky figure that stands out from the rich, brown patina of the rest of the bibliothèque.

The bibliothèque is presented with two bodies: the longer upper section, with 63-inch-tall glass panes in each door, and the lower section that contains two pull-out writing surfaces with green felt and a pair of belt drawers, all perfectly aligned with the burl walnut doors. Behind the glass doors are a total of eight adjustable shelves, while the lower body opens to reveal a shelf behind each door. The thick moldings, such as the ogee cornice of the crown, are subdued, as they follow the overall rectilinear form and do not protrude past the main body. Our Louis Philippe-style walnut bibliothèque would be ideally suited for an office or library, but it can also be an elegant statement piece for displaying sculptures, dishes, figurines, etc. in a dining area, living room, or foyer.

CONDITION: Good condition. Minor nicks and losses with commensurate rubs to pull-out surfaces. Restoration to the back wall of the upper section, largely unseen. Key included for five functional locks (the key is bent, but functions smoothly). The two bodies are designed to be affixed together, but we left them unattached for transportation purposes.
