This painted demi john bottle is quite a find, as the vessel is still nestled in its original wood crate (see detail photo). From Normandy, France, the demi john has been hand-painted red and gold with an apocryphal coat of arms beneath an open crown and accompanied by two furled ribbons and “Pinot Noir”. The bottle would have been used circa 1900 to ferment wine at a vineyard, resulting in the unique appearance of the interior, which contains residual sediments.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Buildup to the interior. Minor losses to painted elements. Some slats of the wooden crate have age separations and/or losses. Some screws have been replaced on the crates. The crate was partially deconstructed for photography and was left with loose slats.
