Hand-carved in Bologna, Italy, this wooden mortar was used as early as the 1600s to process chestnut fruits, grains, and other food items. More practical uses for today’s homes include an umbrella/cane stand, decorative object, indoor planter, or firewood holder.
CONDITION: Strong antique condition. Commensurate age separations, some of which have been filled. Piece of wood added more recently beneath the base. Losses to the shim indicate the wood was added long ago. Small hole in side of mortar. Light oxidation to the iron band, which was added more recently.
