Hand-constructed from wood and gesso with a gold leaf overlay, this French giltwood mirror is in the style of Louis XIV. The frame, which dates to circa 1890 (it was originally supporting a large canvas painting), has naturalistic foliate and floral motifs arranged in a symmetrical composition; frames in the style of later periods would have asymmetrical carvings and arrangement. A 22 1/2 x 33-inch glass has been added more recently, and the mirror can be used in a horizontal or vertical application, as it is currently not rigged for hanging.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Various touch-ups and restorations over the years, with multiple materials (gold leaf, wax, etc.). Some slight age separations in the corners. Originally a frame for a large painting, the mirror has been added more recently.
