Le Chaux Hand Carved and Distressed Limestone Block Fountain from the South of France

SKU: 824-37B Category:

$5,600.00

Description

Hand-carved in the South of France, this rectilinear wall fountain consists of 15 pieces of limestone blocks. The stones have been well-distressed, giving the fountain the appearance of having nicks and losses. Nine stones make up the back wall, each carved with different widths, adding to the charm of the fountain. The rectangular basin is more systematic, with six stones that have been carved with precise dimensions. An iron spout emerges from an aperture in the back wall, allowing the water to cascade into the large basin, which has two iron bars that traverse between the front and back stones. Bars such as these would have been used in France to place receptacles under the spout, allowing village residents to gather water for washing and cooking. Today, the bars can be used to support a small planter box or wooden bucket.

CONDITION: Good condition. Intentional distress presenting as nicks and losses. Some buildup and oxidation to the iron spout and bars. Limestone can change color with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for photos of the current patina.
