Description

The balance of this pair of Venetian candlesticks is quite impressive, given the dynamic movement of the Rococo-style carvings. Hand-carved in the 1800s in Italy, the facades have been hand-painted cream with parcel gilt elements. It was not uncommon for candlesticks of this era to have unadorned verso sides, as typically candle holders of this grandeur were used in churches, where the congregation would only see the front.

Curled leaves of gold, placed asymmetrically around the edges, give the candlesticks their unique, curving form. Some of the leaf curls, such as the feet, are wound tightly in a volute form. Other motifs include flowers, bands of lozenges, and a leaf cup beneath the bobeche. Each bobeche is topped by a small iron pricket, allowing the candlesticks to be used functionally as light sources. The candlesticks could also be electrified and fitted with a socket for illumination via light bulbs or even used as wonderful decorative accessories for a mantel, sofa table, or console.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Very light age separations. Minor losses and small nicks to gilding. One pricket has been affixed deeper, leading to the height variance.
