During the 1600’s, pots like this pair of terracotta Anduze planters would have been used on noble estates to plant fruit trees. The original pots were often finished in a matte patina and adorned with garlands and medallions. Over time, potters began to showcase their craftsmanship, adding additional motifs and using colorful glazes to give the pots a regional flair.
Standing 29 ¾ inches tall with a diameter of 29 inches, our large Anduze pots have a wonderful, distressed finish that allows traces of the terracotta orange to be seen. Interestingly, the garlands and medallions are not present, with the potter instead using large satyr mascarons set in between two rings of repeating roundels. The satyrs are accompanied by a mark that reads “La Madeleine Anduze”, which indicates the pots come from La Poterie de la Madeleine, a famous workshop in the South of France. Perfect as garden ornaments or as functional planters, these highly sought-after pots will make wonderful additions to any home. Our French Anduze pots can be used as outdoor planters (with a liner) in warmer climates, but should be moved to a covered area during the winter months. They can also be used indoors, as decorative pieces of pottery.
CONDITION: Good condition. Intentional loss of glaze and rubs. One of the pots has more significant interior buildup than the other.
