Pair of Large Carved Antique Stone Pedestals, South of France, Early 1800s

SOLD

Description

Standing at roughly 41 inches, this large pair of stone pedestals would make impressive architectural elements for any house. Hand-carved in the South of France in the early 1800s, the gray pedestals have acquired a wonderful patination that gives the stone accents of white and light gray, accompanied by traces of green and brown moss and lichen.

Topped by a five-inch thick square capital, the robust pedestals are capable of supporting garden ornaments, such as statues, finials, and tree planters. The pedestals have a series of carved moldings, enhancing their stately appearance. A protruding ring encircles the top of the square column, just below two layers of thin molding under a cavetto cornice that adorns the entablature. Our antique stone pedestals can be used inside or outdoors as foundations for large decorative items or as stand-alone architecturals.

CONDITION: Good antique condition. Commensurate nicks and losses. Light rubs with accumulation of moss and lichen. Old installation channels in the tops of the capitals. Stone is a natural material that can change colors with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for photos of the current patina.
