An amazing German (Westphalia) stollentruhe, dating to the mid- to late-16th century. The hand-carved trunk has been bleached more recently, allowing the fabulous oak grains to gain prominence. The trunk is in very good condition, given its age, as evidenced by the still intact feet. Trunks of this age are often found with reduced legs, a necessity after spending centuries on cold, damp floors where water rot is common.
CONDITION: Good antique condition. Commensurate losses from 400+ year old wood, coupled with old woodworm. Bleached more recently with traces of the original finish. Evidence of old fills. Some light stains to the interior. The floor of the interior has a large age separation, but the integrity of the storage hold is not affected. Oxidation to iron strapwork, with some missing elements.
