The monumental size of this pair of hand-carved limestone lions is quite impressive, and their stature has been embellished by positioning them on classic, rectangular pedestals. Florence, Italy, is known for its artistic depictions of lions, ranging from the city’s coat of arms to the famous Marzocco lion that is currently part of Piazza della Signoria, and of course, the Medici lions, which inspired this pair.
Just like the original Medici, these lions mirror each other, standing with opposing forepaws on a sphere. The lions are unbelievably detailed, as evidenced by curls of their mane, powerful paws, and stoic countenance. Each animal is positioned above the likeness of a tree stump, which is located under their torso. The lions and their pedestals have a dark gray hue, but have developed patination that gives the stones brown, ochre, and white hues, with the presence of some dark moss/lichen accumulation.
Standing five and three-quarters feet tall, our Italian limestone lions would make wonderful garden statues. They can also be positioned flanking a driveway or entry door, making for a regal and welcoming sight.
CONDITION: Very good condition. Minor rubs and fleabites. Light buildup, mostly seen on the pedestals. Limestone can change color with exposure to the elements. Please contact us for photos of the current patina.
